• Ladies and Gentleman,
I am humbled today to be given the great honour to share my thoughts and pay respect to the heroes and their families that fought and protected for the freedom of the South Vietnamese people.
This year’s Vietnam Veterans day has special significance as it also marks the 50thAnniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. 50 years ago on this day in a rubber plantation near Long Tan in Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam, 120 Australian forces - members of D Company and 6th battalion RAR - against overwhelming odds, successfully defeated and resisted an attack from an estimated 2,500 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese.
The Battle of Long Tan is a significant battle that demonstrates the spirit of Australian and New Zealand men and women that fought alongside the South Vietnamese during the Vietnam War: one of unwavering courage, bravery, determination and compassion.
Sadly, it is also a story of ultimate sacrifice. Tragically on that day, 18 Australian soldiers were killed– The names of these dead heroes are inscribed on the Wall of Remembrance in this War Memorial, along with more than 500 servicemen who also fought in Vietnam and did not return. Of those that did survive, many returned home wounded and devastated from the war, and to a less than welcoming reception from the Australian public for many long years.
Today’s cancellation of the Long Tan ceremony in Vietnam by the Vietnamese Communist government is a further reminder of the unseen wounds from this devastating war. While the Vietnamese-Australians are not surprised by the Communist Vietnamese governments response having witnessed first-hand the oppressive regime, its broken promises and poor treatment of the Vietnamese people, we are still sad and disappointed for the Australian veterans that need the closure for everything that they have endured…It is said that liberty and freedom is a precious gift, but often paid at a devastatingly great price.
As a young Australian-Vietnamese, my story is similar to many like me, my parents fled Vietnam to the open sea by boats seeking refuge from political persecution and were welcomed by the Australian government and people. While I was not born during the time ofwar, I am a product of the love, generosity and sacrifice of great men and women, and of the democratic society that I was fortunate to be born into.
It is the thoughts of the Australian-Vietnamese people and their children when I say that no words can express the deep gratitude, love and respect we have for the Australian and New Zealand Vietnam veterans. You are a reminder of strength and courage, and the hope for us to look forward for the future.
Thank you for taking the risk to fight for a stranger. Thank you for putting your life on the line to fight for a greater cause. For enduring the hurt and the pain when the Australian people were not ready to understand and accept you.
Finally, thank you for giving the South Vietnamese people the fighting chance, for without heroes like you, we would not have the opportunity to live and stand here before you to express our gratitude.
